My Crochet Tote *pattern*

This is an original crochet tote design by me. These are one of my favorite types of bags to make, they're really easy too.

Pattern
Created by Brittany for Creative Me

Hook I
Finished size: about 13 inches wide and 11 inches tall (not including straps)
Gauge really isnt important for this project, more of personal preference

Abbreviations
ch- chain
sc- single crochet
rnd(s)- round(s)
nxt-next
sk- skip
st- stitch

Ch 45
rnd 1: sc across starting in 2nd ch from hook
rnd 2: ch 1, turn, sc across

**When you come to the end of a row, ch 2 and sc down the bottom side of the chain**
Keep going until you complete 6 rounds.

rnd 7-8: sc around. When you come to the corners, 3 sc in each of the four corners. (to form the corners of the bag) *only do the corners for rnds 7 & 8 only!!*

rnd 9-40: 1 sc in every st around.

**If you'd like to incorporate stripes in your project do not cut the yarn to add new color. When you're ready to switch colors, make a slip stitch with color 1(grey) then join in color 2 (pink). *Make sure you pull color 1 tightly, then continue to sc around with color 2 until you are ready to change colors again.* Leave color 1 attached (keeping the  ball of yarn inside the bag and out of the way of color 2) as you crochet around with color 2. When you're ready to switch back to color 1, take the yarn from color 1 and bring up to do a slip stitch into color 2. Put the ball of yarn from color 2 inside the bag and continue to sc around with color 1 .** For a better explanation, click here

Try to switch colors at the same spot every time to keep to color change looking neat from the outside of the bag.

rnd 41: 1 sc in the nxt 20 st, ch 50, sk 20. 1 sc in nxt 39 st, ch 50, sk 20, 1 sc in next 18 st.
rnd 42-44: 1 sc in every st around.
finish off
You can also experiment with lining the bag with fabric. You just have to measure the bag, then measure out the right amount of fabric, use pins to hold the fabric in place, and sew!

~For personal use only, you may sell what you make, but not the pattern~

I'd love to see your finished work, so please feel free to email me pictures so I can feature your work on my blog!

Hope U Enjoy & Happy Crocheting!!

I don't understand what you mean by that. I understand that I'm to ch 2 but what do you mean by sc down the bottom side of the chain? is that establishing the bottom of the bag?

Brittany said...

Yes, that section is creating the base of the bag. When I say sc down the bottom side of the chain, you simply just sc on the opposite side of the chain. Think of it as going in a circle. Its a little difficult to explain. Feel free to ask more questions if you need to.

LOVE this pattern! Just made one for a gift, it was so easy, worked up quickly...I didnt do the striped pattern, just made it a solid color, but embellished it with crocheted gerbera daisies. I will making more of these for sure :)
Thanks for sharing your pattern!

SO cute :) Do you hand-sew your fabric lining into the purse? And (since I've never crochted obviously) is this bag pretty sturdy once it's complete??

Brittany said...

Yep, I hand sew all of my linings onto the bags... I really wanna learn to use a sewing machine, it'd make my job so much easier and faster. This bag was pretty sturdy, I gave it to a friend for her birthday and she carried her books for school in it. But now what I like to do is cut a piece of cardboard and glue it to the bottom of the bag, then put the fabric over it. It sounds really weird, but it makes the bag more sturdy. http://bwalker8706.blogspot.com/2011/02/work-in-progress-wednesdays.html

Hi! I am a beginner to crochet! I just taught myself a couple weeks ago! I have been looking for a simple tote pattern! This looks great! I will be sure to come back once I do it and let you know how it looks! About how much yarn would this take if I do a single color?

Brittany said...

To do this bag in a single color, it will probably take 1 to 1.5 skeins of yarn

This is a great pattern and you explained it perfectly!!! Thanks so much...I am currently making the bag right now can't wait til I finish!!!

Brittany said...

Thank u so much for that. This was actually one of my first patterns...I kinda just write as I go and hope it comes out right lol. I'm also currently making another bag :-)

For rounds 3-6, do you mean one round is all the way around the top and bottom of the chain? Or the top is one round and the bottom in one round? I'm thinking it's the first option, because now that I've finished round 6 the second way I described, it looks way too small to be the bottom of a bag.

Omg I love my new bag and also have made my sister one!!! She loves it too!!! How do I post pics for you to see my work??? Your patterns are great and very easy to understand...thanks so much!!!

What yard did you use?

Anonymous said...

Maybe I'm tooo new at this?.. but I really don't understand the directions after round 2.. is it supposed to have an oblong shape? Help me please!!

Brittany said...

I used acrylic yarn...and once u keep crocheting, it eventually turns into an oblong shape :-)

I'm having some problem with the rnd 3 to 6. Is there a video somewhere that I cam see to help me or something? I'm trying something but I'm really not sure if I'm doing the right way. Thanks! :)

Love the bag but something went wrong lol its really big (length is almost 16 inches not 13) and yes i am totally new to this. I have only been crocheting for 3 months. Thank goodness my daughter and I like large bags and i will just use it to put my yarn in. But what went wrong :]

Hi Brittany,
Love the pattern and work is currently in process. I have a couple of issues I need help understanding::
"When you come to the end of a row, ch 2 and sc down the bottom side of the chain** Am I to crochet in the "back loop" of the chain? Then after doing this are we to return to doing a sc but not in the back loop?

Hopefully you are still responding to your "Comments" page because I would love to complete the bag.
Thank you,
Rosina

Keep going until you complete 6 rounds.

Do you only ch 2 on the first round or all of the first 6 rounds? Do you ch 1 at the beginning of rounds 2-6 or just the beginning of the second round?

For those of you confused by the instruction: "**When you come to the end of a row, ch 2 and sc down the bottom side of the chain** Keep going until you complete 6 rounds.", I was able to understand what Brittany is saying so will try to clarify.

Your first row of stitches is the foundation chain. Let's call it Side A.

Round 1 is sc across. Call this Side B. Round 2 is a chain 1,turn then sc back across Side B.

Round 3: At this point, you chain 2 and instead of f(lipping the work horizontally like you would traditionally going back right-to-left across Side B, you instead rotate the work counterclockwise and upside down so that the chain 2 goes flush against the side of the work and you now begin the sc across Side A, the foundation chain, (what Brittany is calling the bottom of the chain)..

Round 4: Chain 2 and flip upside down again (to Side B) and sc across.
Rounds 5 & 6: repeat rounds 3 & 4

You should now have a long narrow oblong.

As for rounds 7 & 8, I repeated them 1x (i.e. added a row 8 & 9 with three scs in each corner so that the bottom of the bag is wider. The rest of the pattern is self-explanatory. This pattern is very easy yet very functional. Hope this helps. Thanks Brittany!
